Bass reducing ear plugs?
« on: December 16, 2009, 09:10:58 am »
Me and my parter are after some ear plugs which reduce or remove bass, and that you can sleep in. There is a loud pub just down the street from us, and they are constantly playing loud music, especially with high bass levels. Are there any products in particular which can help in this situation? We've tried all the common ear plugs from high street stores, and these help a little, but we are finding it tough to get a good nights sleep most nights. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks Kathy.

Hi Kathy,

Here's a great webpage we've found with a detailed breakdown of specific plugs for you to try.

The article starts with the following:

"Ear plugs have undergone a quiet revolution over the last two decades. For many years, manufacturers produced only wax-cotton plugs; pharmacies today are filled with silicone, PVC, and polyurethane stopples. Web sites also sell plugs specifically designed for hunting, loud concerts, and motorcycling. Now there are even hearing aid-like plugs that drown out external sounds by playing white noise.

Given the myriad plugs on the market, I wanted to find the stopple that silences the most sound yet is comfortable and affordable enough for everyday use. But before I release my results, there is something every silence shopper should know: No plug can create artificial deafness. Even if the auditory canal is sealed shut, loud noise, especially lower-pitched sounds, can vibrate through the body and be "heard" by the eardrum."

Yes, there is a product called SleepFit earplugs. These are special custom fitted earplugs which reduce all frequencies but with an emphasis on the low frequency region. This means you are still able to hear warning sounds like smoke alarms, but annoying low pitched sounds, such as the loud bass from music, are substantially reduced. These earplugs are also much more comfortable than the foam plugs, because they are moulded to your specific ear shape. You will need a silicone aural impression made of your ear which serves as the template to produce the earplugs. This is a simple and painless procedure, but should be carried out by a trained hearingcare professional.

Paul.
