As of April 6th 2006 it became law for employers to supply hearing protection if staff are exposed to 85db of noise. This is the equivalent of standing on a busy residential road. Sound stimulates tiny hair-like cells in your inner ear which send messages to your brain. Like wind blowing in a tree - a little is alright - between gusts of wind the tree springs back into its normal position. However, if the wind blows too hard or for too long the tree will become permanently bent and may break. Extremely loud noises can cause immediate lasting damage. The sudden burst of energy in noises such as hammering or gunshots can cause this type of damage.
